fresh baked

yesterday brian and i walked over to a new addition to the cheviot business district - taber bakery. i had been told that the owner was a young pastry chef, so i was a little surprised to see burnt danish in the case. the glazed cake donut i ordered was acceptable, but much spongier than i prefer. i was starting to be disappointed. all was forgiven, however, when i tried the fresh baked white bread. it was delicious - yeasty and light. i almost ate the whole loaf myself (thank god i can almost justify it because i walked there). they bake on a daily schedule and i can't wait to try tuesday's rye and thursday's multi-grain sourdough.

the rest of the baking schedule:
tuesday: rye, rye rolls
wednesday: bread bowl, kummelweck rolls, hoagie rolls
thursday: multi-grain sourdough
friday & saturday: jalapeno cheddar, white, cinnamon raisin

of note - i also had a sample of the white chocolate pound cake - yum! i'll be buying some next time.

addendum: tuesday: the rye bread is pretty darn good, although, sadly, not salted. i also picked up some sugar cookies with buttercream frosting that simply melted in my mouth.

definitely give it a try if you have a chance. i read in the press that he is having a difficult time of it because of all the construction on harrison. i also like to support the independents!

I have passed the place, and always wondered about it. Thanks for the recommendation.

sad that they're having a hard time. I went there a couple weeks ago, got a dozen donuts and about cleand them out. Then, they didn't have any coins for change! It was pretty odd.

jknepfle-what did you think of the donuts?

I thought they were good...not great. There just weren't many to choose from, nor could I find much else that looked good/interesting.

i agree about the donuts - i've found his other endeavors more satisfying.

yah? What do you like from there? When I was there they had about 3 loaves of white bread and that was about it. This was at about 8AM on a Saturday. Was I too loate?

Why can no one make a good donut? The best I can find is Servatis and they still aren't as good as I remember from when I was a kid.

i don't think you were too late...we went on a sunday at about 9 and he was still baking that day's bread. i think there may be some organizational problems. i have gone a couple afternoons after work (around 2pm) and they have had plenty. i thought his sugar cookies and almond cookies were very good, and i have enjoyed all the breads i have tried (white, rye, and multi-grain sourdough). we also have tried the brownie (which my husband said was ok) and the custard filled donuts, which were pretty much status quo.

i have also been seeking the perfect donut, which is one reason why i was so hopeful about taber. the best donuts i ever remember having were when i was growing up, there was a bakery on north bend right by kroner dry cleaners. i think it was called floyd's, but i really am not sure. they had the best rolls and these donuts called clunkers that were unbelievably good. at least that's how i remember them. the bakery closed a long time ago, i think because the baker was terminally ill. my mom had talked to him about buying the bakery from him, but he said he wouldn't have time to teach her everything. i still dream about those donuts.

I finally got around to going to the bakery myself. When I walked in the door around 7:00 a.m. when they first opened the door, the smell of fresh pastries was out of this world, There were plenty of donuts to choose from. Actually, I was a little overwhelmed. I didn't know what to choose from. One side has had some cinnamon twists which was great, and I got one of there cream cheese filled danish, which was still warm and was just great. They had plenty of goodies. After reading all the posted comments, and news paper articles, about not having much to choose from, well let me tell you all, they have it, it's just while I was standing there deciding what to order, people were coming in and ordering 6 of this and 7 of that, and cleaning the poor guy out. I said well I guess I better make up my mind or else, I will be left with no pastries or even a donut. Talking with a local man who comes every other day to the bakery while on his way to work, grabs a dozen of donuts and some bear claws. He said is was a nice little bakery with lovely people working there. They are so friendly. I will give them my support because they are a new bakery. And my advice to you, if you go and they are empty on some days, this is not a bad sign, this means the bakery is doing what it is suppose to do, selling out! Oh yeah, and by the way, I call in my orders for bread on Thursday and if I need a order for pastries I do the same. They will help you no matter what the party if for. Good cookies too!!!

Remember, this is a small bakery, not a bakery that has 25 employees and not your local bakery who orders in frozen pastries and donuts and just re-heats them, they make them fresh daily. So cheviot people, I have been a local here for 54 years and if you have not tried them, make a visit early one Saturday morning when they open and you will be grateful you did.

They just open in December of 2007, so finding out exactly what the demand is, is probably not the most easiest thing for them to do. They also get lots of work people buying them out early. But keep it up Taber Bakery, I would hate to see you leave.

i have also seen them down at findlay market!!

Findlay Markey? I will look for them when I am down there. I have been in the bakery now once a week buying bread. I love the Jalepeno Cheddar Bread. However, once in a blue moon on some days the bread is flatter than other days which makes it a little harder to make a sandwich when they slice it. I have not tried the sourdough yet, does anyone know how many slices you roughly get out of it? it is hard to justify paying $4.50 for bread if you only get 8 good slices out of it. Maybe they should make it bigger, is that possible?? Anyway, I will try some other goodies that I have noticed in the cooler section, looks tasty.

cc- when i saw them at findlay they had a table to the left as you walk from elder, kind of across from where i saw the bee haven honey (very yummy on the taber bread)

i don't recall how many slices from the sourdough, sorry. but it is tasty.
